Some hints on searching

Databases are, by their nature, fairly inflexible. The search form is designed so that you don’t need to be too exact. It’s generally better to put in less rather than more. If you get too many results, you can try again, being more specific.

  • If you leave all boxes blank, and hit search, the whole database will list, sorted by channel.
  • You can put in partial names in the channel or name boxes: enter chann, in the channel box, and the search will return Channel 4, Channel 5, Channel TV.
  • If you put Channel4, you won’t get anything, because the database entry is Channel 4 - which will get you what you want.
  • Names are listed by first name, so you should search for an individual by full name, or by first name... (dan or dan c or dan chambers, not chambers d.)
  • so you could search for everyone called John at the BBC (should you want to),
  • or (more likely, for example): BBC in the channel box and children, selected from the drop-down box, will list every entry for children’s at the BBC.
  • choices in the drop-down box are fairly broad, in order to reduce the length of the choices list. The top entry is blank to allow searching without limiting the search to a genre/department.
  • you can also search by job title. In order to restrict the number of entries in the drop-down box, “history” (for example) is included in the database under factual. But you can now search for “history” in the Job title box.
  • finally, you can list all the entries for a genre across all channels (for example children, or interactive) by selecting the appropriate genre/department from the drop-down list and leaving the other two boxes blank.
