Find the Lady: Case Closed! Thanks to Jonathan Geffner for clearing this up.
I'm not sure about author Patricia Cornwell's claim in her new book "Jack the Ripper: Case Closed" that she has solved the mystery of Jack's identity. But according to Sarah Weinstein - an occasional performing associate of mine who is slated to play the role of her namesake in the Trillo & Suede series - the vexing Find the Lady mystery is hereby solved...
Sarah has asked me to inform Farnham Films that she is your Unknown. Lady.Sarah (commonly known these days as Aunt Sarah) explains that in 1919 she was the protege - and lover - of both Syd and Charlie Chaplin. Your photo was taken from her screen test for the Hollywood epic "The Shtetl Seductress", for which Sarah was chosen to play the title role. Under pressure from the Hollywood moguls she agreed to change her name to Penelope Blueblood. (Apparently they were prepared to take a chance on a love story concerning a Polish rabbi's hot-to-trot daughter - but only if the role was played by an actress with a more marquee-friendly name.)
Before shooting began, however, Charlie's rivalrous jealousy spurred him to pressure Syd into firing Sarah. The project went forward without Sarah. During shooting, the script underwent a major overhaul, and the film was eventually released as "The Great Train Robbery".
Sarah continued her liaisons with both Chaplins. In 1936, Charlie offered Sarah the female lead in Modern Times. Sarah accepted, but this time adamantly refused to adopt a screen name. Paulette Levy turned out to be more compliant. And so Paulette Goddard got her big break, and Sarah Weinstein drifted into an obscurity sweetened only by the fact that Farnham Films has been using her screen test photo as their unwitting logo. And by the fact that she is occasionally employed by a witless ventriloquist.
Sarah has thus far provided no evidence to validate her story. However, she insists that if you place her photo alongside the logo photo, the resemblance is uncanny and undeniable. Here’s the photo, and here’s a link to the home page on my web site, in which you can see Sarah in another photo, together with several of my other performance partners:
Sarah has instructed me to inform you that if - for some unfathomable reason - you do not consider this photo comparison to be evidence enough, then she will be happy to submit to DNA testing and/or foam and splinter analysis.
Sarah has further asked me to inform you that - since the Secret has now been revealed - she is now available for a Comeback, and will entertain offers for suitable roles in any and all film and television projects. (Please note: "suitable" means Starring Leading Lady roles only, please.)
